In an incredible feat of survival, a brave dog named Connie has been rescued from a shipping container at the Port of Houston after spending eight days trapped with no food or water. The U.S. Coast Guard discovered the canine survivor on Wednesday, January 31, when they heard barking coming from inside one of the containers.
The Coast Guard officers were inspecting thousands of shipping containers at the port when they heard the unusual sound. “Oh, it’s scratching, dude,” one of the inspectors said as they looked up at the container, stacked 25 feet in the air. A crane was used to bring the container down, and out popped Connie, a friendly and sweet dog.
“As soon as we opened it, we could see the little dog’s face poking out. She was right there, like she knew we were going to be there to open it for her. And she just, she wasn’t scared or anything. She just seemed happy more than anything, to be out of that dark space and in the arms of people that were going to take care of her,” Petty Officer 2nd Class Ryan McMahon told The Associated Press.
According to the Coast Guard, Connie was found in a container that was destined for overseas, and it is believed that she accidentally got in while in a junkyard. The exact location of the container prior to its arrival in Houston is unknown, but many junked vehicles were found alongside the containers being shipped overseas.
After being cleaned and given food and water, Connie was brought to the Forever Changed Animal Rescue shelter in Pasadena for further care. If you are interested in adopting this brave and resilient dog, please visit pasadenashelter.com
